Born on June 12, 1932 in Thiruvananthapuram, actress Padmini may not be in this world today, but her achievements have kept her alive in the hearts of her fans. This famous actress of South is said to be the first actress to work in Hindi cinema. Padmini worked in films in Tamil, Telugu, Russian and Malayalam languages during that period. Apart from this, she was also a part of Hindi evergreen films ‘Mera Naam Joker‘, ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai‘. Padmini also worked with the showman of Hindi cinema, Raj Kapoor.
Apart from being an excellent actress, Padmini was also a brilliant Bharatanatyam dancer. Born in Poojappara, Thiruvananthapuram, Padmini’s father’s name was Thankappan Pillai and mother’s name was Saraswathi. Padmini turned to the film world in the year 1949. Along with elder sister Lalitha and younger sister Ragini, Padmini came to be known as the ‘Travancore Sisters’. While working, Padmini made famous on-screen pairings with Raj Kapoor, Raj Kumar, Prem Nasir, Dev Anand, MG Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan, which received immense love from the audience.

Padmini made everyone crazy with her character in the film ‘Mera Naam Joker’. The actress played a bold role in the movie. The result of Padmini’s acting and beauty was that she was compared to Vyjayanthimala, the top actress of that era. Apart from Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Padmini also paired with South Superstar Gemini Ganesan on screen.
Talking about Padmini’s film career, she worked in the Hindi film ‘Kalpana‘ in the year 1948. After this she appeared in ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’, ‘Mera Naam Joker‘, ‘Aashiq‘, ‘Afsana‘, ‘Chanda Aur Bijli‘, ‘Bhai-Behan‘, ‘Dard Ka Rishta’, ‘Mastana‘, ‘Ragini‘. ‘, ‘Amar Deep‘, ‘Rajtilak‘, ‘Pardesi‘, she was seen proving her acting prowess. In the year 1966, Padmini was awarded the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for the film ‘Kajal‘. Padmini made her directorial debut through the 1989 film Mohabbat Ka Paigam. However, Padmini breathed her last on 24 September 2006 in Chennai and said goodbye to the world forever.
